Workshop 1.1: Organic Electronic Materials. Concepts and Applications
Workshop leader: Antonio Facchetti, Northwestern University and Polyera Corp
08:30-12:00 Monday 24 September 2007

This preconference workshop explains the basic concepts that participants will need to understand the fundamentals of organic electronic materials. Furthermore the operation of the principal organic-semiconductor based devices such as field-effect transistors, light-emitting diodes, solar cells will be described. Finally, the principal printing methodologies and recent developments in low-temperature inorganic/transparent semiconductor deposition will be presented.

The workshop will cover the following topics:
  1. Organic Electronic Materials. Introduction
    • Semiconductors
      - Structure and basic principles
      - Charge transport and optical properties
      - Small molecules, polymers, and hybrid semiconductors
      - Structural organization versus electrical and optical properties
    • Dielectrics
      - Inorganic, polymers, and self-assembled mono/multilayers
      - Critical parameters affecting OFET performance
      - Surface treatments, interfacial effects
    • Conductors
      - Metals and conducting polymers, contacts and charge injection issues

  2. Organic Field-Effect Transistor, Light-Emitting Diodes, Light-Emitting Transistors, and Solar Cells
    • Device structure and operation principles; comparison to Si technologies
    • Film microstructure and morphology versus device performance
    • Device characterization and parameter extraction
    • Techniques for film deposition and patterning

  3. Low-Temperature Deposition/ Transparent Inorganics
    • Amorphous/poly silicon, transparent oxide

  4. Printing Technologies
    • Flexography, Gravure, Pad, Inkjet

  5. References
  6. Upcoming Conferences, Symposia, Workshops
The benefits
  • Develop an understanding of the different organic semiconductor materials, devices and fabrication processes.
  • Gain an overview of fundamental optoelectronic principles.
  • Get up to speed on organic semiconductor technology in three hours.
